Ankadirano IV

This pump is not well maintained, but it works. The pump was built on instigation of the former ‘conseil de maire’ (advisory of the mayor), who wanted a pump close to his house. This means that from the beginning the installation of the pump was a politically charged initiative without much consent from the villagers.

There are less than 18 households that use the pump, but because there is no functioning committee nobody really takes care of it. Yet it has never been broken. Before this pump was built they used to drink directly from the rice fields, but that caused a lot of stomach maladies. This is no longer the case since they drink from the pump. The pump is close to the former palm oil field, which was installed by the socialist government, but is still used now for palm oil production by the villagers who live here. They use 400 liters of water per day for the production of 18 litres of palm oil; only during the production season (January - March).

Water thas used to be drunk from is pointed at by the boy.

The main advantage of the pump is that people have much more time to rest now.

Joeline was not impressed by the motivation of the committee members and tried to explain to them how valuable the pump is and that they should take better care of it.
