Betela

This pump is a very atypical one. This has to do with the fact that Betela is a spiritual centre where people with mental disorders are sent to. The pump works, but there is no functioning committee. There is a big church, and a pastor but he is the leader of the church and does not take responsibility for the pump.

These pillars are a residue of a large spiritual centre that was here before. People are expected to be cured from their mental disorders through spiritual healing. The people in this village are very poor because they are marginalised and stigmatised. They do not own land because their tanin-drazana is elsewhere.

This lady is the treasurer of the pump and has collected money in the past when the pump broke down. In the rainy season there is always water, but one time during the dry season the pump broke down and they collected money to get the pump repaired. Because the pump does not have too many users, it can afford to be non-institutionalised. Yet, the challenge remains how to guarantee a certain level of sustainability.
